World Tour Brochure Day 1 August 21, 2010 World Tour With crowd gathering for a 10am departure of Osa's Ark the cloud cover lingered over the area. Snoopy was on location to help entertain the group while we waited for the weather to improve. Condor airlines partners with "Wings of Help" and also has teamed up with Snoopy to become a mascot promoting both Condor and Wings of Help on Snoopy's 60th Anniversary. Condor assists "Wings of Help" with logistics and transportation of goods to disaster areas, and also is an airline servicing resort destinations in the US and Caribbean from Frankfurt,Berlin and other cities in Germany. Crew members Tom Schrade, Pilot and CEO of Unlimited Adventure. LLC and Bruno Gantenbrink European and World Champion Glider Pilot as Co-Pilot and Detlev Konnerth, photographer made final preparations while awaiting clear skies. Departing around 1:30pm local time Osa's Ark took flight with crowd waving and cheering bonn voyage as the crew headed for their first destination of Sault Ste Marie, Canada. During flight the ceiling began closing in and they made the decision to overnight in St. Ignace, Michigan, arriving at the airport around 7:00pm. They were greeted by the Mackina County Airport Manager, Paul Fullerton. Paul was extremely helpful by loaning an airport car and stopping by with his family to have dinner that evening. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAY 2 August 22 2010 World Tour After departing St Ignace, MI Sunday August 22 Osa's Ark crossed the Canadian boarder and landed in Sault Ste Marie, Canada at 9:50am to clear customs before continuing on to Kapuskasing, CA. Arriving they were greeted by the Kapuskasing Flying Club and members of the community. Luc Paquette provided the pictures which are displayed below. Miro Spacek from the Flying Club presented Tom with a Kap Flying Club Crest and also a hand pump which will probably be of use along the journey. One member handed the crew local apples that were hand picked one hour before their arrival, tiding the crew over until diner later that evening in La Grande Riviere, CA. Landing La Grande Riviere at 6:10pm being greeted by the mayor Normand Lacour and Michele Cote who owns the local helicopter service. After refueling, they provided us with a ride to the Hotel. That evening they assisted us with flight planing for the next day, Michel arranged for a larger hand pump which would be needed for the next fuel stop in Kuujjuaq. The Mayor also agreed to meet the crew and provide transportation back to the airport in the morning. Both men were very helpful and we want to again express our appreciation for all of their help and assistance. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Day 3 August 23, 2010 World Tour The crew met early for a quick breakfast before being shuttled to the airport. Michel arranged to have the pump sent to the airport before departure. Bruno,Tom and Dedlev departed the airport and rendezvoused with an A star helicopter owned and operated by Les Helicopters Whapchiwem Itee with photographer Marc Andre Poulin on board. Flying over the dam of Clear Water Lake, Marc was able to take a spectacular photograph of the flying yacht doing a splash and dash on the reservoir, additional photos were taken along the spillway and in the Vicinity. The scenery near La Grande Riviere is amazing and the lakes and rivers beyond are magnificent, Tom is looking forward to returning and spending time fishing and exploring this area. It was on to Clear Water Lake which was formed by a meteorite strike long ago... Unfortunately the sky was overcast and photos simply do not it justice. Flying on Osa's Ark crossed over hundreds of lakes and rivers... all uninhabited, but undoubtedly some really great fishing ! Moving on to Kuujjuaq, CA and stopping for a fuel at 12:50pm and departing around 3:30.. As you can see by the picture Bruno is enjoying the job of fueling up with the hand pump. What a GUY! This time Tom had the easy job, just sitting a top of the wing and holding the dispenser and appreciating the scenery. After departing Kuujjuaq, heading north crossing hundreds of miles of water the flying yacht passed the Island Michel had warned us about, which is populated by hundreds of hungry Polar Bears. The warning was given, if needing to make an emergency landing here be very careful, the local inhabitants had a bad reputation of dealing with strangers. Continuing past the Island, the co-pilot pulled out the charts for Frobisher Bay, now called Iqaluit finding they close at 6pm nearly two hours before the planned arrival. The weather was deteriorating and all on board became a bit concerned....see photos of Bruno as he attempted to use his Sat phone to alert them of a late landing, as contact could not be made by radio... "try as we might"! Eventually, radio contact was made, informing the airport of an after hours landing. Fortunately they agreed to wait and even rolled out the "red carpet" by John Graham the airport manager and chauffeured to the Hotel. It was Great! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 4 August 24, 2010 World Tour Departing Iqaluit, CA approx 11:00am in route to Kangerlussuaq(Sondre Stromfjord). The weather was improving and a tailwind was forecast, high overcast, and the freezing level was forecast for 7000 feet. The crew enjoyed the forecast tail wind, and ceilings high enough to allow clearance of the terrain and take a needed short cut over the north peninsula. Continuing on route the ceiling dropped and the pilot elected to try to go to VFR on top. This worked for a hundred miles or so, then the tops became higher and tailwind started to diminish. As the tops came up above the freezing level were down and into the clouds, but the old girl continued on. As the miles past behind, they came to the decision point...or the point of no return. Bruno and Tom decided the best course of action was to continue on. Later, tired of flying in the clouds they made the decision to descend and fly beneath the clouds. Hoping they would break out at a reasonable altitude, descending thru 3000 feet and then 2000 feet then 1000 feet and we were still in the clouds, continued to down to 500 feet MSL, still no ground contact. They slowed the descent, and set up for a water landing in the event it really was zero Zero visibility. Fortunately passing thru 300 feet Bruno called out ground contact! At 200 ft msl they were finally in the clear with good visibility and a calm sea. Bruno had set up some way points to navigate to which would guide Osa's Ark into Sondestrom fiord navigating to those way points and eventually entered the fiord with a confident knowledge they were in the correct fiord. Entering the Fiord the ceiling was a little of 300 feet, and the side walls of the fiord were slightly less that, with real mountains further back. Continuing into the fiord the ceilings dropped to about 200 feet, but with calm waters, and flying amphibian and confident that a safe landing could be made if needed. Passing a couple of fishing boats along the way, further up the fiord a fog deck formed and a black mast was showing through the fog, passing overhead it was the mast of a dredge on a barge being pulled by a tug boat. Flying on up the fiord, they came to a point when Tom said to Bruno," I think we should make a precautionary landing and wait for better weather." Bruno said he thought he saw some lighter coverage ahead and that he thought we should go a bit further. We continued on, rounded a corner and passed a Y in the fiord. Then Bruno, said "maybe you are right... we should land." This time, Tom thought he detected thinner fog and better visibility ahead and said lets go a little further. In another mile or so things improved to the point they were both confident they should continue on. The ground fog dissipated, the ceilings lifted and arriving to Kandalusquag the ceilings were up to nearly 400 feet and a successful landing was made. Meeting up with friends from Europe who arrived in Bruno's TBM the day before. On board the TBM Piloted by Holger Fahnrich, was Tom Enders CEO of AirBus, Ulf Merbold a physicist, ( the first ESA astronaut to go into space) and Frank Franke President and CEO of Wings of Help. All were happy to join up heading for the hotel checked in and headed to the Rowing Club for nice dinner with the local fare.... Muskox and Reindeer. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Day 5 August 25, 2010 World Tour Starting the day with a good breakfast weather was checked and the decision made to leave Kangerlussuaq for Nuuk, Greenland with Tom Enders taking the right seat as co-pilot and Ulf Merbold in the back. The crew navigated west down the fiord for 80 miles, reaching the coast headed south towards Nuuk. En route passing a small fishing village and noted they had an airport.. Continued on with weather deteriorating and clouds lowering. Within 50 miles of reaching Nuuk found the ceiling was less then 200 feet so they elected to turn around and go back to Maniitsoq, Greenland and wait out the weather. Everyone headed to the tower for a phone call to Nuuk and received good news the weather was improving, thus they headed out once more. Landing in Nuuk for fuel and met up again with the TBM took lots of photos before continuing to Narsarsuaq. Flying down the coast of Greenland the controller informed the crew there was plane that wanted to team up with them for a photo shoot. About 30 miles out from Narsarsuaq meet up with Thomas Jespersen, the head trainer for airport controllers in Greenland, flying a Red Renegade and was accompanied by Dedlev prepared to take some great photos of Osa's Ark over the Glaciers and ice flows. We headed on and even made a splash and dash in front of the airport. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Day 6 August 26, 2010 World Tour A quick breakfast and then headed to the airport to refuel. Saying goodbyes the two planes departed Narsarsuaq, this time Holger was sitting in the right seat and piloted Osa's Ark all the way to Kulusuk, Greenland . The weather was vastly better, heading due east and then up and over the ice cap. After flying over the ice cap, again the Flying Yacht continued over the ocean filled with icebergs. Spotting 5 giant whales, they descended down to circle and photograph. Tom guessed they were each over 40 feet in length. Refueling in Kulusuk and headed on to Reykjavik, Iceland. Upon landing meet by Baldur Sveinsson who had photographed the landing. Osa was in need of 25W60 oil, Baldur knew exactly where it could be found. Planned to rendezvous in the morning for departure so he could get some air to air photos over Iceland. Reykjavik is a beautiful city, with a nice hotel and great dinner at a historic restaurant. --------------------------------------------------------------- Day 7 August 27, 2010 World Tour Departing Reykjavik, Iceland the two planes flew to Hornafjordur for a fuel stop and continued on to Wick, Scotland where they were greeted by Andrew. He was a great help and even chauffeured to the hotel as well arranging to pick up and deliver the group back to the airport in the morning. Everyone purchased a bottle of Old Pulteney Scotch ( a local scotch) to commemorate our successful crossing of the North Atlantic. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Day 8 August 28, 2010 World Tour Departed Wick and flew to Inverness Scotland. There Tom Enders met up with his Citation Jet, everyone said good byes and he headed back to work. The remaining crew discussed how they should proceed that day with deteriorating weather. Finally everyone concluded to rent a car and do a driving tour of Loch Ness. It was a great site seeing day seeing castles and bag pipers. ---------------------------------------------------------- Day 9 August 29, 2010 World Tour The weather was still a problem so the crew took a much needed break and stayed another day in Inverness and enjoyed sightseeing by auto, visiting Loch Ness and the Urquhart Castle. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 10 August 30, 2010 World Tour Departing Inverness, Scotland with weather not the greatest they flew to Norwich, United Kingdom to refuel. This turned out to be an experience all on board will remember. The tower required a landing on 27 with winds out of the north at 28 knots gusting to 36. Upon advising how difficult the landing would be the pilot requested to land on a closed runway which was converted into a taxi way, rather than granting the request the controller alerted the fire department to be on stand-by. After departing Once again weather became an issue and we were forced to land in Cologne, Germany for a short period to wait out the rain, and then we continued on to Frankfurt. Upon landing in Frankfurt they were greeted with a champagne reception hosted by Condor Air in their hanger. ------------------------------------------------------ Day 11 August 31, 2010 World Tour We departed Frankfurt and headed to Hamburg to visit the Airbus Factory. There, Tom Enders and staff gave a warm greeting to Osa's Ark. He presented a bottle of Apple Schnapps and Air Bus hats. Photos were taken of the S-38 parked under the wing of an Air Bus A 380. ----------------------------------------------------------- Day 12 September 1, 2010 World Tour Departed Hamburg and headed to Dortmund Germany teaming up with Bruno. Giving some rides and then headed for Bruno's forest home. That evening enjoyed a Westphalia Dinner with some of Bruno's family and close friends. ------------------------------------------------------------ Day 13 September 2, 2010 Spent the day visiting Bruno's Company and touring the area Turned in early....the marathon trip was taking its toll. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Day 14 September 3, 2010 Headed to Augsburg, and prepared for the departure to Switzerland and Lake Lucerne in the morning. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 15 September 4, 2010 Departed Augsburg and headed towards Lake Lucerne. The weather wasn't perfect but we knew it would be better in Switzerland. Over the City of Zug we met up with Ueli Diethelm who guided us to our landing spot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9ERfeD-jCM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 16 September 5, 2010 Meeting up with Ueli Diethelm flying his Super Cub on floats, who once again made the first landing showing the requested landing area. Landing behind him with a slight tail wind, which was filmed by hundreds of people and TV stations. Departing Lake Zurich and headed back to the Frankfurt area, landing at Eggesbach, a great airport a few miles from the International airport. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 17 - 19 September 6, 7, & 8 2010 Back in Frankfurt time was needed to get organized and do a little sight seeing, spent two nights at the Intercity Hotel, then drove around and ended up for two nights in Weisbauden. A very nice smaller City a short distance from Frankfurt. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 20 - 27 September 9, 2010 Departing Egglesbach and heading toward Jersey, UK. Needing fuel, stopped at Beauvais, France for gas. Jersey is a great Island. Osa's Ark was warmly welcomed and put on display along with many other aircraft. Flying numerous trips around the island over the next few days was able to enjoy the sites from air as well as touring around on the extremely narrow roadways of the island. It was time to catch up on emails, needed maintenance performed on Osa's Ark, and having time to rest and recuperate. A very Heartfelt Thank You to Mike Higgins who made this all possible, a truly great guy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 29 - 35 September 16 Departed for Goodwood in Chichester, UK. The day began cloudy but turned sunny by mid morning. The flight was spectacular crossing over the English Channel. Welcomed by Rob Wildeboer and other members of Goodwood Revival, Osa's Ark was placed on display for the upcoming event. This event was spectacular, viewers, exhibitors and participants dressed to recreate the past with music of the era,the roar of the antique airplanes in the background and buzzing vintige automobiles racing the track, the buildings and even the transportation vehicles were of period...no detail was missed feeling as if one stepped back in time. Special thanks to Rob Wildeboer, who invited Osa's Ark to attend this spectacular event ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 1 of the World Tour Ends Osa's Ark placed on display at the Josepf Koch Museum Grossenhain, Germany Stay Tuned for Part 2 of the World Tour Winter 2011 Cape Town here we come! |
